Google is about to put ads inside its AI Mode answers in the UK.
On 28 October, Google said it is “scaling ads in AI Mode” to ten more countries, and added: “In Q4 2026, we plan to expand to additional locales, including Brazil, Mexico, and the United Kingdom.” Q4 runs to 31 December, so the UK launch could land in the middle of your busiest weeks of the year.
Your existing Search, Shopping and Performance Max campaigns will take part on their own. You cannot switch it off, and Google will not show the results in a separate report.
For ecommerce and digital directors, the lesson is short: ads in Google’s AI Mode are coming to the UK. You can’t switch them off or see them on their own, so set your baseline now and judge Google on your own orders.
What Google says
The announcement came from Shashi Thakur, VP and GM of Google Search Ads, on Google’s Ads & Commerce Blog on 28 October:
“Now we’re scaling ads in AI Mode in Australia, Canada, India, Kenya, Malaysia, New Zealand, Nigeria, Pakistan, the Philippines, and Singapore. In Q4 2026, we plan to expand to additional locales, including Brazil, Mexico, and the United Kingdom.”
Google also said “queries are, on average, three times longer than traditional searches” in AI Mode, and that “click-through rates are already similar between sponsored and organic product list items within AI Mode.” In the US, it is launching “multiturn ads”, which can show in follow-up questions as someone keeps chatting.
Google’s help page on ads in AI Overviews and AI Mode sets out the rules that matter for your budget:
“Existing Search, Shopping, and Performance Max campaigns are automatically eligible to serve ads within AI Overviews and AI Mode.”
On control, it is just as clear: “you can't target ads exclusively to AI Overviews or AI Mode, or opt out of showing ads in them separately from Search.”
And on reporting: “Performance metrics for ads in AI Overviews and AI Mode are included in aggregate in your standard Google Ads campaign reports.”
The same help page lists where ads can show inside AI Overviews and AI Mode today. The UK is not on that list yet. For now, UK ads can show above or below an AI Overview, not inside it.

What it means, in plain terms
AI Mode is Google’s chat-style search. People ask longer questions, then follow-up questions, and get one written answer instead of ten blue links.
Soon in the UK, that answer can carry your ads, marked “Sponsored”. Three things follow:
- It happens to campaigns you already run. No new campaign, no new budget, no opt-in. If you run Search, Shopping or Performance Max, you are in.
- Google picks the moment. Google says it matches ads to the question and, for broader questions, to the AI answer itself. Broad match, AI Max, Shopping and Performance Max can join those broader chats. Exact and phrase match keywords only show when the question is clearly about buying.
- It all lands in one number. Clicks, cost and sales from AI Mode are mixed into your normal campaign totals and search terms report. Google gives no column that says “this came from AI Mode”.
Why it matters for the P&L
- Spend can move without anyone deciding to move it. New places to show ads mean new auctions. Some of your budget may flow into AI Mode answers before your team has looked at what they look like.
- You can’t see what the new space earns. If ROAS goes up or down in December, you will not be able to tell how much came from AI Mode and how much from normal search.
- Timing is awkward. Google says Q4. Black Friday is 27 November and Cyber Monday is 30 November. A change in where your ads show, during peak, makes this year’s results harder to compare with last year’s.
- Your conversion data does the steering. Google’s own advice is to pair AI-powered targeting with Smart Bidding “backed by accurate first-party conversion measurement”. If your tracking counts the wrong things, the machine chases the wrong shoppers in a new place.
- Your product feed becomes your shop window. Shopping ads in AI Mode use your Merchant Center data. Google says ads may also show with short AI-written “explainers” that draw on your website, which you “can't manually write, edit, approve, or opt out of”.
Google sees this as a growth plan. TechCrunch reported that Philipp Schindler, Google’s chief business officer, told investors on 28 October: “This includes taking our monetization footprint global for the first time.” For an advertiser, that is a reminder to measure the new space yourself.
This links to two earlier notes. The AI Assistant channel is a floor, not the full AI discovery story looked at free visits from AI tools. Attribution tells you who took the credit. A holdout tells you who earned it. explained how to test what Google Ads really adds. With no AI Mode report, that kind of test matters more.
What is not clear yet
- The UK date. Google says “Q4 2026”. It has not given a day, and Search Engine Land notes the announcement “does not specify an exact launch date”.
- Multiturn ads. These are US-only for now. Google has not said when follow-up question ads come to the UK.
- How it shows in Google Analytics. A click on an ad in AI Mode is still a Google Ads click, so we expect it to show as normal paid search (google / cpc). Google has not said it will be labelled any differently.
- Click quality. Google says click-through rates are similar for sponsored and organic product listings in AI Mode. It has not shared what those rates are, or how many of those clicks buy.

Director checklist
- Take a “before” picture now. For each Search, Shopping and Performance Max campaign, save four weeks of spend, clicks, cost per click, sales and sales value from Google Ads. Put your own paid orders from Shopify, Magento or your finance system next to it, by day.
- Mark the day it lands. Ask your team to watch for the UK launch and add a note in Google Ads and Google Analytics on that date. Without a note, nobody will remember why December looks different.
- Check what Google Ads is chasing. Make sure your main conversion is a paid order, counted once. Small steps like add to basket should be watch-only. This matters more when Google picks new places to show your ads.
- Read the search terms report weekly. AI Mode questions are longer. Look for long, chatty searches that cost money and don’t sell. Add negative keywords where they make sense, because Google says those controls still apply.
- Know which campaigns can join broad chats. Broad match, AI Max, Shopping and Performance Max can show against wider questions. Exact and phrase match only show for clear buying questions. Decide where you want that reach before peak, not during it.
- Fix your product feed and key pages. Titles, prices, stock, delivery and returns in Merchant Center should match your site. Google may use your website to write short AI explainers next to your ads.
- Plan a test for January. Since there is no AI Mode report, the only way to see what it adds is a proper test. A holdout or lift test after peak will tell you more than any dashboard.
- Judge Google Ads on your own orders. If Google’s sales rise and your own paid orders don’t, ask why before adding budget.
Questions to ask your team this week
- Which of our campaigns will be able to show ads in AI Mode when it lands in the UK?
- Do we have a saved “before” picture of spend and our own orders, by campaign?
- Is our main Google Ads conversion a paid order, counted once?
- Who reads the search terms report, and how often?
- Is our Merchant Center feed accurate on price, stock and delivery?
Caveats
- It is a plan, not a date. Google says it plans to expand to the UK in Q4 2026. It could slip.
- Not all bad news. If people shop through AI Mode, being there may win sales you would otherwise miss. The point is to measure it, not to fear it.
- Every account is different. Small, exact match accounts may see little change. Large Shopping and Performance Max accounts are more likely to feel it.
- Your books win. Google Ads and Google Analytics are estimates. Your order system is still the source of truth.
Final thoughts
#25/100 — Ads in Google’s AI Mode are coming to the UK. You can’t switch them off or see them on their own, so set your baseline now and judge Google on your own orders.
New places to show ads are not good or bad on their own. What matters is whether they bring sales you would not have had. Take your “before” picture this week, keep your conversion data clean, and test after peak.
