ChatGPT Ads Can Now Connect to GA4: What Ecommerce Directors Should Decide First
ChatGPT has become a paid media channel in the UK this year, and this month it gained a new way into your analytics. OpenAI has published a beta that lets advertisers connect a Google Analytics 4 (GA4) property to OpenAI Ads Manager, the tool used to buy ads in ChatGPT.
It looks like a harmless reporting setting. It is actually a data-sharing decision, and it arrives just as many retailers are deciding whether to test ChatGPT Ads before peak trading. In this blog, we’ll explain what the connection does today, why it matters for the P&L, and the checks to make before anyone in your team clicks Connect.
What has changed
According to OpenAI’s help article, connecting GA4 lets advertisers share GA4 data with OpenAI “to support campaign optimization, where eligible, and compare attribution results” between OpenAI Ads Manager and Google Analytics.
The detail matters more than the headline:
- It is an early beta. Access is through your OpenAI account manager. Today it only supports setting up the connection. Mapping GA4 events to OpenAI events, which is needed for reporting, is “coming soon”.
- Viewer access is enough on the GA4 side. Alongside access to the Ads Manager account, it needs a Google account with Viewer access or higher to the property, and approval of read-only Google Analytics access.
- One property per advertiser account. Each Ads Manager account supports one GA4 connection and one selected property, so the property you pick matters.
- It comes with legal promises. By connecting, your organisation authorises OpenAI to retrieve and use the selected GA4 data under its Advertising Terms, and confirms it has the notices, consents and lawful bases needed.
- The early numbers are not sales. The first report covers the last 30 completed days, and OpenAI says the event totals include every event in the property, from every traffic source. They are not purchases, not conversions from ChatGPT Ads and not ROAS.
Why it matters for the P&L
ChatGPT Ads are already live in the UK. They went live here in June 2026, with a self-serve Ads Manager beta rolling out to UK businesses from 19 June, according to Adtrak’s timeline. So this is not a US-only curiosity. Three commercial risks follow:
- A new channel will mark its own homework. OpenAI’s reporting documentation says Ads Manager uses last-touch attribution with 7, 14 or 30-day click windows and an optional one-day view-through window. Google Ads, Meta and GA4 all count differently, so the same sale can be claimed more than once.
- Viewer access is not a governance process. A paid media manager with Viewer access could share your whole GA4 property with a new ad platform without anyone in legal, privacy or finance knowing.
- Early dashboards can mislead. The first GA4 numbers you see in Ads Manager are property-wide event totals. Anyone who reads them as ChatGPT performance will get the wrong answer.
A worked example
Imagine a UK fashion retailer running a £10,000 ChatGPT Ads test through November. (An illustrative scenario, not a benchmark.) The paid social manager connects GA4 because the option is there. Ads Manager reports strong last-touch sales, Google Ads and Meta both claim some of the same orders, and GA4 shows less again. In January, the board asks what ChatGPT Ads actually delivered, and nobody can answer with confidence, or explain who approved sharing the analytics data.
Director checklist before you connect
- Decide who owns the decision. Treat any new GA4 data share like any other: one named owner, with privacy or legal sign-off recorded.
- Check your privacy notice and consent setup. Confirm they cover sharing analytics data with advertising platforms, because by connecting you are telling OpenAI they do.
- Choose the property deliberately. You only get one per advertiser account. Use your live production property, not a test or roll-up property.
- Review who has Viewer access. Remove old agencies and leavers, so only people you trust can authorise a share.
- Tag every ChatGPT Ads click. Ads Manager supports landing page query parameters, so add consistent UTM tags and judge the channel in GA4 alongside everything else.
- Set up purchase tracking properly. OpenAI recommends its browser pixel plus its Conversions API for server-side purchases, and only
order_createdevents count towards its sales and ROAS columns. Make sure your developer or agency maps that event correctly. - Judge the test on your backend. Compare Shopify or ecommerce platform sales with GA4 and Ads Manager, using the same dates and time zone, before scaling spend.
Caveats
- The feature is changing quickly. Event mapping is not live yet, so what you can actually report on will change. Re-check the help article before you rely on it.
- Shared data is not a performance verdict. Connecting GA4 does not prove ChatGPT Ads work, and not connecting does not stop you measuring them in GA4 with UTM tags.
- Ad personalisation in the UK is consent-led. OpenAI updated its policy in June to require explicit opt-in before personalising ads for UK and EU users, as Adtrak notes. That may make UK results differ from US case studies.
Final thoughts
#8/100 — Every “Connect” button is a data-sharing decision, not a reporting setting.
ChatGPT Ads may well earn a place in your media mix. Give it a fair test with clean UTM tags, a backend source of truth and a recorded decision on data sharing, rather than a click someone made because the button was there.

FAQ
Q: Do we need to connect GA4 to run ChatGPT Ads?
A: No. The connection is an optional beta. You can run and measure ChatGPT Ads with OpenAI’s pixel or Conversions API, and see the traffic in GA4 using UTM tags.
Q: Will OpenAI be able to change our GA4 setup?
A: OpenAI says the connection requests read-only Google Analytics access. It can retrieve data from the selected property, not edit it.
Q: Can we switch it off later?
A: Yes. OpenAI says you can disconnect from the connection’s settings in Data Sources. Record when it was connected and disconnected so your audit trail is complete.
